The increase in the pollution level and stress level due to modern lifestyle has triggered new diseases and disorders among human beings. Many diseases and disorders have become severe or widespread. Headache in literary terms means disease of the head. Ayurveda has identified eleven types of headaches that can be due to various causes. The most common causes of headache are Inflammation of the Meninges, Encephalitis, Cerebral Abscess, Migraine, Hypertension, Cerebral Hemorrhage, Trauma, Vasodilator Drugs and Alcohol Hangover. Some other causes of Headache are fever, metabolic disorders and last but not the least diseases of the Ear, Nose and Throat.


Headache has become a common problem especially with the urban society. People from almost all strata irrespective of the age, gender or class suffer from this problem partly due to the pollutants and noise in the atmosphere and partly due to the wrong lifestyle that is becoming the order of the day.

Drinking fizzy and alcoholic drinks is seen as a statement. Having a glass of milk will be termed as being immature to have hard drinks. Ayurveda strictly says a NO - NO to alcoholic drinks and chemically treated beverages. Root for many headaches has been traced to alcoholic drinks. Regular intake of alcohol may even lead to psychiatric problems. Irregular sleeping habits do aggravate headaches. Skipping meals or irregular timings for having meals further lead to serious consequences. Stress due to competition, family or any other reason leads to heaviness of the head and subsequently headaches.

Ayurveda has listed some herbs which can be used to cure and reduce headaches. Betel leaves known for analgesic and cooling properties give immediate relief when applied to the centre of the head during a headache.

Garlic and ginger are known to be painkillers in Ayurveda. Bishops weed is very effective in migraine. Bishops fumes if sniffed or seeds taken directly can be soothing for a person suffering from migraine. Almonds soaked overnight, grinded into paste and taken with ghee in the morning are the best bet for treating old headaches which trouble a large portion of the population. Fresh lemon squeezed in warm water and drunk empty stomach leads to reduction in headache resulting from the gas in the body.

Oily and spicy food, alcohol should be avoided if you are suffering from headache. Instead of any other drink cows milk and plenty of water and fresh fruit juice should be given to the body. Ayurveda has not only identified the various causes of headache but has also cured many kinds of headaches over time.

Food and beverages rich in carbohydrate, oil and sugar should be avoided as they increase the body fat. Green gram and horse gram is recommended in Ayurveda as a part of meal.
